Self-aware woodland creature Zooey Deschanel teamed up with Hello Giggles partner Sophia Rossi started a production company, and they just inked a deal with 20th Century Fox TV. This is exciting news; these women are focused on lady empowerment, and they’re in a position to do something about it in a very public way. It’s extra cool because Deschanel and Rossi obviously take female friendship seriously, and their advice in the above video is thoughtful, no-nonsense, and girl positive. I was only gonna watch a minute of it, but now I’m listening along and saying things like, “OK, riiight?” and “COME ON!”

“We’ve known Zooey as an actress through New Girl, and as we got to know her as a producer through the script she developed, we quickly realized that there is so much more to her,” 20th TV chairman Gary Newman said. “Zooey and Sophia have their finger on the pulse of young people and particularly young women, and we really responded to that.”

It’s probably too much to expect that everything they do be 100 percent GIRL POWER all the time forever, as they live in the world, and men are an exciting part of the world. That said, I hope it’s pretty damn close. Men (and the token lady and person of color!) have been telling women’s stories for a long-ass time, and there’s no reason to think two smart women couldn’t create well-rounded shows that are primarily written, directed, starring, and staffed by women. But, uh, no pressure, ladies??

Anyway, it’s very cool that they’re gonna help shape the future of television, and I have high hopes. I also have a spec script. LADIES, FRIENDSTER ME.

Dakota Fanning, Michael Moore, Shailene Woodley Named to Tribeca Juries

Patricia Clarkson, Dakota Fanning, Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Olivia Wilde, Hugh Dancy, Brett Ratner, Susan Sarandon, Shailene Woodley, Gabourey Sidibe and Irwin Winkler are among the more than 50 jurors who will serve at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

The typically far-reaching panels range from actors and filmmakers to critics, restaurateurs and creative executives, from the thoroughly indie (“Frozen River” writer-director Courtney Hunt) to the brazenly mainstream (“Rush Hour” director Ratner), and from a Metropolitan Museum of Art trustee to Justin Bieber’s manager.

TFF organizers announced the makeup of the six competition juries on Monday, as well as the juries for the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Awards and the Tribeca Film Institute Latin America Media Arts Fund awards.

The juries will present more than $250,000 in cash and prizes at an awards ceremony to be hosted by Whoopi Goldberg on April 26. The festival opens on Wednesday and runs through April 29 in lower Manhattan.

The jury for the World Narrative Competition will consist of producer Irwin Winkler, who will serve as jury president; actresses Patricia Clarkson and Dakota Fanning; directors Mike Newell and Jim Sheridan; and critic Lisa Schwarzbaum.

The World Documentary Competition will be judged by a panel made up of filmmakers Michael Moore, Lucy Walker and Julia Bacha, actress Kim Cattrall and poet, rapper and songwriter K’naan.

The Best New Narrative Director jury will consist of actors Camilla Belle, Whoopi Goldberg, Kellan Lutz and Leelee Sobieski and writer-directors Susannah Grant, Zach Helm and Courtney Hunt.

The Best New Documentary Director will be chosen by filmmakers Stuart Blumberg, Rachel Grady and Ricki Stern, actress Olivia Wilde, Google Ideas director Jared Cohen, Vogue Italia editor Bethann Hardison and television host Sal Masekela.

The Narrative Short Film Competition will be judged by actors Hugh Dancy and Bridget Moynahan, Chanel CEO Maureen Chiquet, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, director Shari Springer Berman, restaurateur Drew Nieporent and Freej creator/director Mohammed Saeed Harib.

The jury for the Documentary and Student Short Film Competitions will consist of directors Brett Ratner and James Spione, actors Susan Sarandon and Shailene Woodley, producer Susan Zirinsky, artist and Met trustee Robert Hammond and music entrepreneur Scooter Braun, who manages Justin Bieber.

Members of the two Creative Promise Awards juries include actors Rosario Dawson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Mekhi Phifer and Gabourey Sidibe, editor Jean Tsien and executives Claire Aguilar, Julie Goldman, Eugene Hernandez and Debra Zimmerman.

The Latin America Media Arts Fund awards will be made by actor Ricardo Darin, American Documentary/POV vice president Cynthia Lopez and Lemon Films co-founder Fernando Rovzar.

The Art Deco set was designed to evoke the all-white, Jazz Age interiors of English decorator Syrie Maugham, whose clients included Bunny Mellon, Elsa Schiaparelli, and the Duchess of Windsor; V.F.’s fashion and style director, Jessica Diehl, put the 11 cover starlets in pastel satin dresses and frothy feathers to lend a 20s and 30s boudoir feel. Across the panels are actresses Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Elizabeth Olsen, Adepero Oduye, Paula Patton, Felicity Jones, Lily Collins, and Brit Marling. Chloe Moretz on her acting choices

Chloe Moretz has said that it is rewarding to play characters so unlike herself in films.

The Hugo actress revealed that she believes choosing more adventurous roles will ensure that her career has longevity.

“I mean, it’s acting. I like these roles because they’re not me. That’s what’s fun about it. If I played another version of Chloe all the time, it would be boring,” the 14-year-old explained in an interview with Teen Vogue.

“I’d love to be in this industry for the rest of my life - to write, direct, and produce my own movies. I’m an overachiever, you know? I’m always trying to find a way to do more.”

Moretz also insisted that she will always remain grounded no matter how successful she becomes, adding: “Nobody really sits you down and gives you advice, but I’ve seen people who are so amazing and big but who are also so humble and normal. And I think, ‘If they’re like that, I can be like that too’.”

She recently revealed that she is a member of the Film Foundation because of her love of old movies, particularly those starring Audrey Hepburn.

On her passion for the eco-system: “I’ve always had a thing for trees; I think they are just so profound, so when I was 15 and in high school, I was watching the trees and the leaves blowing in the wind. The juxtaposition of the wind blowing, and the leaves and the trash from the school lunch in the air, made me so mad. Ever since then I have just had this really intense passion for educating myself and other people, on the environment and what we’re doing to the planet…It’s more than just recycling or picking up a piece of trash, or turning off the water when you’re brushing your teeth. It’s about treating everything with compassion and love, including humanity.”

On believing in whatever will be, will be: “I am working on the show The Secret Life of the American Teenager right now. I would love to do another film, but until I read something that I am really inspired by and passionate for; I refuse to do another movie because I’m on the wave and I have to ride it.”

On one of her lifelong goals: “Our population is so large, and there hasn’t been a company or an organization that has stepped up and provided organic food to people on a lower income level. So one of my goals in life is to start a giant organic, biodynamic farm and have it fun like a community, but sell the produce for less than conventional prices. I think the education is an important element for me too.”

““For me this is the big break that I’ve been looking for. Being on Glee is a full-time job because you have dance rehearsals, singing rehearsals, recording sessions; it truly is a musical every day. I have so much respect for the crew and cast. I think I’m going to learn a lot. It’s funny because I finished up a show called Terra Nova about a year ago and I’ve been auditioning since then. There was a time that I thought I needed to go back to acting classes or have a coach before every audition. I even had a chat with my manager who told me that I needed to up my game. I was getting worried about my work. Every actor goes through a time when they doubt themselves. I’m really looking forward to getting back into singing. I haven’t been in the studio or written any songs for a couple of years now. Music was my first passion. Being able to get back into the studio in addition to acting is a big deal for me. It’s the best of both worlds.””

A Rising Starlet

Heaven help teenage girls! As if the cattiness, boy-craziness, and angst formerly reserved for noted passed in class or whispered phone calls weren’t bad enough, now they’re blasted across Twitter and Facebook. It’s in this multi-platform existence that Chloë Grace Moretz, 16, emerges as a refreshing example of good old-fashioned youth. A prolific Instagrammer, Moretz fills her feed (more than 1,000 pictures and counting) with family photos-her entourage consists of her mom, with whom she lives in L.A., and four older brothers-inspirational quotes, music obsessions, and friends making goofy faces; in short, everything ever thumbtacked to the bulletin board in a minor’s bedroom. If not for the occasional behind-the-scenes shot from a Hollywood back lot, you’d almost mistake the actress (of nearly 10 years) for your average teenage girl. Almost.

Imagine Kirsten Dunst had an iPhone during her Interview With the Vampire days, or Leelee Sobieski circa Eyes Wide Shut. Perhaps their shared images-maybe a pretty flower, a sunset-would belie their penchant for serious and seriously mature characters. So goes it with Moretz, famous for playing the all-too-real vampire in Let Me In, the wise-beyond-her-years kid sister in (500) Days of Summer, and the gun-wielding Hit-Girl who shocked audiences with her ballsy delivery of a certain expletive (rhymes with runt) in Kick-Ass.

In June, she slips back into the cape and mask for Kick-Ass 2. This time around, “She’s really conflicting with her own emotions,” Moretz says of the role that lander her on the radars of Hollywood heavyweights (see Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton, who cast her in Hugo andDark Shadows, respectively).

Portraying Dark Characters

“Is she actually fighting crime for good, or is she just a murderer?” The film is in keeping with Moretz’s track record of heady characters. Her first role, at 7, was the daughter of a prostitute on the TV series The Guardian. “I like doing dark material,” she says, “which is interesting since I’m such the opposite person. I’m so light and happy. I have a good family and I’m loved.” Occupying the lives of the emotionally disturbed can take its toll. To cope: “I’ll watch the Disney channel. My family makes fun of me for it, but with the characters I do, I always use that as my upper.”

There’s no telling how many hours of Disney Moretz consumed in order to compensate for her psychologically jarring turn as Carrie White, Stephen King’s telekinetic teen infamously doused in pig’s blood on prom night. Die-hard fans of the 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek, fear not: “It’s less of a remake and more of a retelling of the book,” Moretz says of the movie, which hits theaters in October. Directed by Boys Don’t Cry’s Kimberly Peirce and costarring Julianne Moore as Carrie’s mom, “It’s a romantic-abusive love story between mother and daughter that, even if you had a fine life growing up, brings out every insecurity within you.” Of playing opposite Moore: “She’s one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with,” Moretz says, barely able to catch her breath. “And if I could do every single movie for the rest of my career with her, I would, because she’s brilliant.” Carrie marks Moretz’s firt time playing a title character. As the haunting image of her bloodied face on the film’s ad states: If you didn’t already, now “you will know her name.”
